Non-genetic Causes of Hair Loss

When a person thinks of the words hair loss, there is one thing that comes to mind, genetics. It’s true if your mother or father had issues with hair loss you are most likely going to have them as well. However there are many of other causes that can result in hair loss as well and some of them do not even involve hair transplant surgery as a cure.

Disease and Illnesses- There are so many different diseases and illnesses out there that can either cause hair loss or have medication that can cause hair loss. If you have not been diagnosed with a disease or illness but are starting to lose your hair, contact your doctor. Sometimes the loss of hair can be coming from an illness that is lying quietly in your body with no present symptoms.

Hormonal Changes- Pregnancy and menopause are two issues women deal with when it comes to hair loss. However, female hormones (estrogens) and male hormones (androgens) can play a huge part in hair loss along with an underactive or overactive thyroid.

Psychological disorders- Trichotillomania is one disorder that can cause patients to pull out their own hair.

Aging- Sometimes older age is to blame and there is not too much that can be done besides looking into hair transplants.

Improper hair/ improper nutrition- If you are not eating healthy or taking care of your hair the right way it can lead to hair loss. Shampoos, conditioners and hair dyes are all leading factors to hair loss.

Stress-Stress is the leading factor in many health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart attacks so it is not too much of a surprise to learn that it can cause hair loss as well. Watch your stress and take some time out’s for yourself.
